Obituary of Kay Irene Powell

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Katherine Irene Powell which occurred on Sunday August 7, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born September 14, 1914 she was the daughter of the late Francis and Alice (Carson) Swain. Kay was an avid curler, curling until she was 94. She was a lifetime member of Carleton Curling Club. Kay graduated from the Saint John School of Nursing in 1937 and went on to become the supervisor of nursing for the Emergency Department at the Saint John General Hospital. She enjoyed playing bridge, playing with the same group for more than 60 years. Kay will be missed by sons Sid Powell and Richard (Atsko Nose) Powell both of Saint John, NB; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents Kay was predeceased by husband Silas Powell, 4 sisters and 2 brothers.Arrangements are under the care of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John (634-1701). Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 9, 2016 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Wednesday August 10, 2016 at 3:00pm from Castle Funeral Home Chapel. In Lieu of flowers donations in Kay’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
