Obituary of Gordon Gilliland

Gilliland, Gordon Frederick Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on June 25, 1935, he was the son of the late Fred and Christina (Wilson) Gilliland. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife and best friend Barbara (Haslam) Gilliland, of nearly 50 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Scott Gilliland (Josée Lefebvre), of St. John’s, Newfoundland; daughter, Cathy (Stephen) Craig, of Stoney Creek, Ontario; grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah Craig; several nieces and nephews and several cousins from Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland and Australia. His family and friends benefited from his positive outlook on life and wonderful sense of humour. In his earlier years, Gordon went to sea with the British Merchant Navy and sailed with the Headline Shipping Company until meeting Barbara and immigrating to Canada in 1960. He worked for the Irving Oil Refinery for 32 years, until his early retirement in 1991. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, “Fallsview Chapel”, 309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John West (634-1701) visitation will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2011from 7-9 p.m and Friday, May 20, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from Castle Funeral Home. A reception will follow the service at the Fallsview Family Reception Center Interment will take place at the Lorneville Cemetery, following the reception. Donations, in memory of Gordon, may be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
